Cabinetlandia

A half-acre utopia in the New Mexico desert features a graveyard, a library, and a mailbox.

Since I drive from Silver City, NM to Las Cruces, NM occasionally, it was my desire to see Cabinetlandia. The first time I tried, the Lewis Flats Road NE bridge that crosses I-10 was closed for construction. Funny, when I finally crossed it, it was a dirt road bridge. Never seen that before!

It was a desolate drive through rural and dusty roads that venture far from civilization. A dairy farm and lots of tiny birds were the highlights of the journey. There were a couple of other interesting things along the way, like some bottles that were arranged into a sculpture of sorts with barbed wire.

The path was overgrown as I got closer and then there were thorns and I had to stop and walk the rest of the way. It was located close to the highway but not very easy to access. The directions are perfect, just beware of the thorn bushes as you go down the final stretch of “road”. I wish I had the time to sit and read some of the many books in the cabinet, but for this trip, my mission was to find it.
