The first 4 verses of this song came to me at the end of a 5 mile run. I was hoping I’d remember it, as I often have good lyrical ideas as I run that fade away as the sweat stops and my breath comes back. Lucky for me, I kept singing these words to the rhythm of my steps and I actually remembered it long enough to sing it into my iPhone. I also kept the original melody.

The rest of the song was inspired by Romans 7:15-25, particularly from a couple of verses that I totally related to which basically said, “I do not understand why I do the things that I can not stand….”

Here are the lyrics:

You didn’t know me
But you gave it all to me
You didn’t owe me
But you did it all for free

I’m a mixed up criminal kid
and my head’s not screwed tight
to it’s lid
I can not pay you back
For what I did

I do not understand
Why I do the things
That I cannot stand?
(You didn’t know me)
(You didn’t owe me)

And the things I wish to do
Are the things that I’m sure
I will never do
(You didn’t know me)
(You didn’t owe me)

I do not do
What I want to do
But I do the very thing
That I hate to do
(You didn’t know me)
(You didn’t owe me)

And the things I wish to do
Are the things that I’m sure
I will never do

break

You didn’t know me
You didn’t owe me
You didn’t know me
You didn’t owe me

You didn’t know me
But you gave it all to me
(You didn’t know me)
(You didn’t owe me)

You didn’t owe me
But you did it all for free
(You didn’t know me)
(You didn’t owe me)

I’m a mixed up criminal kid
and my head’s not screwed tight
to it’s lid
I can not pay you back
For what I did
(You didn’t know me)
(You didn’t owe me)

For the good
That I want to do
I do not do
But the evil
That I don’t want to do
That’s what I do

Wretched Man That I am
Who will deliver me?
